Husbands, now you will actually have a charitable excuse for your annoyed wife to go golfing. Or vice-versa. Golf obsession can overtake any person even if he or she is not a 55-year-old dad; it’s still perplexing to anyone on the outside, sort of like a cult or Tupperware party.

Take your Callaway drivers and putters to the Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 15 for the King’s Cathedral & Chapels 10th annual golf tournament. The tournament will beat your normal Saturday afternoon session with the crew, providing a Hawaiian lunch to participants and traditional entertainment. Wouldn’t you rather be eating laulau than listening to your friend make that joke about getting stuck in the bunker for the thousandth time?

Pastor Glenn FooSum talked on the number of good causes that the tournament will benefit. Each year, the church donates a $1,000 sports scholarship to Maui High, Baldwin, King Kekaulike or Lahainaluna High School; Maui High will be this year’s recipient of the tournament money. As for private schools, the church’s own school, Ka‘ahumanu Hou Christian School, will also get money.

King’s Cathedral will allocate another portion of the funds to its sports ministry. According to Randy Rodrigues, a board member of the beneficiary shelter Family Life Center, the money granted to the sports ministry will go towards developing youth involvement in athletics on Maui.

“For example, we might have a basketball camp and invite people to come in for free; all expenses are paid for by this tournament,” Rodrigues said. “In the past we’ve taught kids how to ride horses.”

Other ministries within King Cathedral will benefit from the registration fees of participants. Pastor FooSum said that full ministries including music, bus and ushers and greeters will receive funds. The same ministries will also be the volunteers on par three holes handing out snacks and water to the golfers.

Pastor FooSum listed the Maui Food Bank as one of the beneficiaries (they received $500 from the golf tournament last year).

The golfers can also look forward to bringing a few goodies back home. Like a free motorcycle (courtesy Harley Davidson) for a person who’s lucky enough to sink a hole-in-one on the 17th hole.

And all participants get an opportunity to win a cash jackpot, half of which will be donated towards the ministries. If you’re never the lucky winner at family bingo nights, there are still a number of other prizes to decrease your chances of going home empty-handed.

You can fill out a registration form at King Cathedral’s front office or sign up at the Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Gourse. You can even show up on the green the day of the tournament and still play.
